Big Ride Day 40

Photos from Day 40

After our late night, I tried hard to sleep in this morning but to no avail. I awoke sweating in my hot and muggy tent around 8:00 AM and somehow managed to lay there for another hour without falling asleep again. I finally got up and went to breakfast with Doug at Friendly's. He had never been to one before. It brought back memories of the East. After breakfast, we decided to take a ferry out to some islands in the middle of Lake Erie. We ended up going to a place called Put-In-Bay. It was a nice little island, though very touristy. Since it's such a small place, a lot of people drove around in golf carts. It was funny to see so many of them riding on the streets. They were having their "Christmas in July" celebration and there were tons of boats in the harbor and lots of people walking around. We had a nice relaxing time sitting in the park and watching the people before having some lunch right by the water. We ended up by going up in this tower built on the island where you can get a magnificent view of all the surrounding islands and even see into Canada. The tower was a monument to the lasting peace between Canada and the U.S. It was pretty cool. About 4:30 PM, we got on the ferry back home and the minute we stepped off, it started pouring rain. We thought that must be an omen that we should take an early dinner and went to a little restaurant called Dianna's for a good home-cooked meal. When we got back to camp, we saw that the rain had actually blown a few people's tents away and had dampened everything. Fortunately, I was high and dry. A little while later, it began clearing off and we had a wonderful, cool and rainless night.
